Vaastu Shastra – The NORTH

Vaastu is considered as the system to maintain the harmony of the energies generated by the interplay of the forces of nature represented by the five elements i.e. the earth, water, wind, fire, and ether. How to consider a North-facing house? The direction in which you face while going out through the main door is the direction that your home is facing. So, if you move out in north direction while leaving from the main entrance, you have a north-facing house Vastu. 

Vaastu has immense significance for two cardinal directions i.e. East and North. Both the directions are charged with divine energy. North is considered to be the most prominent cardinal direction after East. North is opposite direction of South and perpendicular to East and West. The significance of North is due to its sacredness where all positive energies reign and that is why Northern sides of home or factory are recommended to leave open. 

Lord Kuber, the God of wealth is the directional Lord of North direction. Kuber, a Yaksha is the God of wealth and indulgence and is also called Ratnagarbha and thus, keeping this side open allows inflow of wealth and riches. This direction is called Wealth and Career direction. It is the direction for arrival of wealth. The planetary Lord for this direction is Mercury. The Vaastu Purush’s chest and breast area occupy the north direction. The northern direction has the North Pole, which provides tremendous positive energy to the whole structure.

North is the essence of life and any defect in north or wrong construction can lead to slow growth, more expenditure than earnings, and loss of wealth. This direction should be kept open, beautiful, light & less burdened. There should be big openings in the North direction to receive the energies of North Pole. According to Vaastu, North shouldn’t be obstructed by any heavy weight, tall trees, and more the open space in North, the more presence of riches and harmony in living place. Therefore, any construction should be avoided in the North as it can hamper the health, wealth, and success of occupants.

North-facing properties have been found most suitable for people owing to their business or being involved in financial services as their profession. North direction is also associated with the planet mercury thus they are also good for people working in printing and publishing sectors. Also, the north direction represents the element water and thus can lead to prosperity for the people associated with the media and entertainment industry.

Avoid

• Kitchen as it may burn all positive energies emanating from North.
• Master Bedroom – as it brings restlessness.
• Toilet – Results in heavy losses
• Northern wall should be kept light and do not keep too many furniture.
• Avoid placing closets on the north walls of the room as it makes the wall heavy and, in turn, stops the from flowing freely.
• Avoid Septic Tanks in North.
• Avoid Red colour.

Slopes in a north-facing home

• For an auspicious north-facing property avoid a plot that slopes from the north to the south.

Avoid clutter

• Keep the North clutter-free to welcome divine energies.

Trees in a north-facing home

• You should not have trees on the north side of your home as they may act as an obstruction.

Colour - Green

The direction North is governed by the planet Budh (Mercury), which represents number 5. It is governed by the colour green, thus the walls facing North should be painted with light green color.

Place a Mirror

Placing large mirrors on the northern walls of a room enhances the benefits provided by this direction since it is doubled by reflection.

Water storage tanks

Water storage tanks can be placed in the north.

North-facing home office

The north direction is the direction of the lord of wealth. Home offices in the north can help in financial gain. Place the workstation facing the north direction and ensure that there is a wall behind you. For career growth, place a fountain in the north.

Plants for north-facing home

For the north-faced house, in Vaastu, the following plants can bring prosperity to your home and boost positivity. All these plants need indirect sunlight and grow well in bright and well-lit condition. You can place these plants near a north-facing window or in the front balcony:

• Aglaonema
• Araucaria
• Begonia rex
• Bromeliads
• Chlorophytum
• Dieffenbachia, also known as leopard lily
• Ferns
• Hedera

Moreover, placing a money plant in the northern part of the house will attract positive energies. Avoid planting mango, banana or lemon plants in the north direction. In a north-facing balcony, one can grow holy basil (which is auspicious), marigolds, seasonal flowering plants, spinach, lettuce, mint, and parsley.
