by Madhu Sarkar

Vastu Shastra, literally means “Science of Architecture”, are texts on traditional Indian system of architecture. These texts describe principles of design, layout measurement and spatial geometry. According to Vastu Shastra there are four cardinal directions recognised as a square i.e. North, East, West & South and all the four directions have a conjunction point i.e. North-East, South-East, South-West, North-West.

A new day begins with the rise of Sun, thus East is regarded as the direction of new beginning. East direction has huge significance in our life because East is the governing direction of solar deity – Sun God and the most significant direction in Hindu cosmology from where all positive energy springs to earth. Sun is by far the most important source of energy for life on Earth. Sun is the planet of light & enlightenment. By transferring the energy in form of solar radiance, it gives growth to Life, vegetation etc. and thus is the essence of life on Earth.

Sun is a red coloured star. Its rays are made of seven colours, sometimes denoted by the seven horses of sun’s chariot - violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red. White coloured lotus, which is called the seat of lord Sun, denotes a mixture of these seven colours.

East direction Is also owned by Lord Indra - the King of Gods & head of Vasus. He is called Purandara, destroyer of forts of demon Vritra (the king of darkness). He is the lord of energy, electricity & Vajra (thunderbolt). The drops of rain are called Indu in sanskrit and he who sends them is called Indra, the “rainer”, the “irrigator”. Indra is a Hindu deity responsible for rains, overall prosperity, festivity & power. He is the king of Gods residing in heavens, the god of clouds, storm and thunder. He is “the lord of wealth”. Rain is a very important source of water, a necessity for survival and growth of life on earth. Thus, you can call east as the direction for growth.

East is a light direction. Heavy and large articles should be avoided in this zone. It is a light zone with availability of cold colours, particularly in the morning. Sun bathes the whole world with its nectar-like morning rays rich in ultraviolet, violet, indigo & blue colours. It should have less weights. An extended East is auspicious as it will trap more and more of positive energies.
